"To many travelers, museums often represent the very essence of a city. Exploring through museums is to search one’s way through a city’s past, present and the endless possibilities its future withholds. Compared to large scale national museums, smaller museums (often privately funded) are allowed more freedom with innovative themes and designs. Shanghai Glass Museum is among one of those museums, where an old factory is transformed into a space that can be “lived in and experienced.” Underneath its silent exterior lies the passion for its history and untold stories."
Zhang Lin, President of the Shanghai Museum of Glass

Frances Arnold about the Shanghai Museum of Glass:
"Opened in May 2011, the Shanghai Museum of Glass represents not only a welcome addition to the city’s cultural scene, but also an exciting milestone in the relentless renewal and regeneration of China’s financial capital.
From the gleaming façades of myriad skyscrapers; historical ties with international craftsmanship and style; as well as recently unearthed archeological gems, Shanghai’s mastery of glass is as long as it is versatile. Fittingly housed in the former premises of the Shanghai Glass Factory, the museum pays homage to this extensive history, skill and indeed very fabric of Shanghai today, where swathes of glistening glass-clad towers dominate the cityscape.
Coordination Asia were approached by Zhang Lin, the museum’s CEO, and, guided by his sheer passion for the beauty and almost limitless potential of glass, created a showcase that inspires, educates and intrigues. Taking leads from a portfolio of successful projects completed internationally, Coordination’s design and concept has set a new standard for Shanghai museums.
Interactive in its approach, exhibits incorporate technology, considered presentation and participation to engage the senses. From digital displays describing the molecular makeup of the medium via-easy-to-understand graphics, visitors are guided through the history of glass in China and abroad through beautifully lit artifacts, playing on the materials’ unique qualities to spectacular effect. Younger museum-goers can discover the many applications of glass through fun installations, whilst a ceiling-high LED screen bridges the museum’s various areas, its lights glistening in display cases and artworks.
But it is the space’s adjoining elements and features that make Shanghai Museum of Glass a destination in which to linger and be entertained. Live glass blowing shows, for example, housed in one of the site’s thoughtfully renovated buildings, as well as workshops and demonstrations throughout bring the medium to life, whilst a gift shop and café add an extra dimension for visitors. A temporary exhibition space will show a roster of international artists working in the medium, starting strongly with a dazzling show by Steven Weinberg opened in July 2011.
Experienced in exhibition design and the evolving roles of museums today, Coordination Asia were able to advise on the venue’s potential beyond a showcase for glass alone. Thus, a well-appointed mezzanine doubles as a spectacular backdrop for events of all kind, whilst a dedicated screening space provides an unexpected setting for corporate presentations. Future developments for the site include G+ Park, a concept dedicated to creative discourse with features to include a sculpture yard and artists' studios exploring the aesthetic possibilities of glass; whilst a science and business complex will inject enterprise and encourage academic exchange.
Located in the Baoshan suburb of Shanghai, the museum makes a bold first step towards the total revitalization of the area, formerly a seat of industry in the city. Within the next decade, the district is poised to become a residential and commercial hub, linked to downtown via a string of subway stations. The Shanghai Museum of Glass and G+ Park will be at the centre of this urbanization, and, having already forged strong links with leading names such as Venini glassware and the Corning Museum of Glass in New York, brings not only a global relevance to the area, but also acts as an international platform for creativity in Shanghai.
Globally significant through its unique collection and approach, Shanghai Museum of Glass sets a new precedent for the city through its palpable passion, beautifully expressed by Coordination Asia. "
