Preview of the future SHANGHAI FILM MUSEUM
by Frances Arnold, Shanghai

Let us paint you a picture: on a stiflingly airless August day back in 1886, a small group of Chinese and foreigners gather to witness a first for an ancient country on the cusp of change. Countless tales have already been told, with yet more quietly forming in the collective consciousness of people… As the projector begins to whirr and Shanghai’s very first moving picture flickers onto the makeshift screen, so begins a new era in not just storytelling, but also celebrity, place and history. The possibilities, as we will discover, are endless.

It was a magical moment in history, and one that the Shanghai Film Museum will celebrate whilst sharing the wonders of cinema with an audience of young and old, tourists and residents, professionals and enthusiasts. From the early silent movies; film as a tool for propaganda; the era of celebrity; right through to today’s multi-billion renminbi industry, Shanghai’s film culture is as rich as it is long. Through unique objects, engaging technology and a palpable passion for film, the Shanghai Film Museum will take visitors on a journey to uncover this long heritage to inspire the audiences of today, as well as those of tomorrow.

DVD sellers and stores on every street corner are testimony to our ongoing love affair with film. Whilst these new millennium habits may have replaced much of the magic of cinema as a venue, they act as a reminder of the responsibilities of the Shanghai Film Museum: to reignite and maintain the excitement, significance and potential of film.

From the outset, visitors will be immersed in a surreal yet familiar landscape of faces, figures and props, illuminated by an iconic golden projector. Museum-goers will be guided through installations evocative of early shadow puppetry, bustling film sets and the timeless elegance of Shanghai’s Golden Age of cinema. On the walls, large-scale murals depicting the stars of the silver screen will engage visitors and celebrate the faces of yesteryear in a way that is both chic and contemporary.

Going beyond the glitz and glamour, famous filmmakers will be brought to life through reconstructions of their studios, studies and dens of creativity. Elsewhere, visitors will be able to take a sneak-peek behind the scenes into the workings of a busy film set, offering a glimpse into the complex industry that bring Shanghai's stories to life.

The Shanghai Film Museum will not only take responsibility for the preservation of the past, but also keep an eye to the future, presenting possibilities, pushing boundaries and encouraging dialogue. This will be achieved primarily through community, schools and adult educational programs (screenings, workshops and lectures, for example), as well as special areas within the museum designed to surprise and delight.

The ‘Carpet of Lights’, for example, will transform the visitor into the star, photographed by an invisible throng of paparazzi; whilst elsewhere, ‘Lip-Sync Contests’ will illustrate the challenges of foreign film in a way that is both engaging and fun. Similarly, ‘Motion Capturing Studios’ will offer budding actors and actresses their moment in the spotlight.

A dynamic genre calls for dynamic presentation. Like the silver screen giants it seeks to celebrate, the Shanghai Film Museum will engage, inspire and connect with its visitors through considered use of interactive technology. At the same time, great stories call for reflection, and museum-goers will be able to take time out from their cinematic journey in a themed café and wine bar, poised to become a hub for film enthusiasts and professionals to mingle, share ideas and inspire.

But let’s return for a moment to those early nineteenth century film-goers. Doubtless, they’d be overwhelmed at the progression from monochrome, flickering images to today’s technicolored three-dimensional masterpieces; yet the magic they witnessed on that summer’s day has remained a constant in the city’s rich and ever-evolving film culture. The essence of the Shanghai Film Museum is to continue the tradition of sharing stories – the greatest of which are always waiting to be told.
